Walsall Raising Ethnic Minority Achievement Partnership

The main role of the WREMAP team is to support and challenge schools in:

  • Raising the standards of achievement of pupils from minority ethnic backgrounds
  • Meeting the particular needs of pupils for whom English is an additional language (EAL)
  • Ensuring that equality of opportunity is at the forefront of all school policy and practice

    In order to fulfil this role the team will support schools in:

  • Data collection, target setting, informing input and tracking progress of individual minority ethnic pupils and identified cohorts of minority ethnic pupils
  • Identifying issues that lead to minority ethnic pupil underachievement
  • Highlighting the specific needs of African Caribbean and mixed heritage pupils
  • Assessing English language acquisition and assessing cognitive skills through home language
  • Promoting the use of the CRE ‘Learning for All’ document to ensure equality of opportunity
  • Accessing continuous professional development for EMAg teachers and all other teaching staff and governors on all issues relating to raising the achievement of minority ethnic pupils
  • Meeting and consulting on the needs of refugee pupils and asylum seekers
  • Promoting inclusion by ensuring school curriculum and pastoral programmes reflect the diversity of a multiethnic society
  • Developing a multidisciplinary approach to combat underachievement and promote citizenship
  • Celebrating diversity by involving pupils, parents and community groups in school life and decision making
  • Using funds effectively to employ high quality staff with targeted job description, to access good quality resources to supplement school resources, and to access high quality, practical training in EMA issues.

    The Consultants will respond rapidly to all requests for guidance and training on issues pertaining to raising the achievement of minority ethnic pupils.
