Walsall Healthy Schools Programme

What is a Healthy School?

A Healthy School is one that promotes the health and wellbeing of both its pupils and staff. It does so using a well – planned, well – taught curriculum that is delivered in a physical and emotional environment that promotes learning and healthy lifestyle choices.

Becoming a Healthy School

To achieve a Healthy School Status, a school needs to meet an agreed criteria in four theme areas:
  • Personal, social and health education, including sex and relationship education and drug education (including alcohol, tobacco and volatile substance abuse);
  • Healthy Eating;
  • Physical activity and
  • Emotional health and wellbeing (including bullying)
  • Becoming a Healthy School has real benefits

    Evidence shows that healthy pupils achieve well at school:
  • Pupils in Healthy Schools improve faster in terms of achievement in national tests and healthy lifestyles than those in other schools.
  • Pupils in Healthy Schools report a range of positive behaviours, from being less afraid of bullying to being less likely to use illegal drugs
  • Healthy Schools are more inclusive
  • Healthy Schools have more effective liaison with pupils’ parents or carers and with external agencies
  • Schools can use the whole – school approach when becoming Healthy Schools to bring about sustained improvement
