The Role of the EWO

What do Education Welfare Officers (EWOs) do?

Education Welfare Officers are responsible for helping parents to ensure that their children of school age attend school regularly. EWOs have a duty to promote and secure high levels of school attendance. They visit schools regularly to consult with teachers and check attendance registers. They also assist parents in making sure that their children receive education.

EWOs also provide advice and support on issues like bullying, exclusion, alternative education provision, child protection and behaviour difficulties.

Education Welfare Officers also issue Employment permits and entertainment Licences and vet and licence Chaperones responsible for the welfare of young people taking part in entertainment.
